A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile early Saturday morning, resulting in a tsunami warning for the East Coast of Australia effective today.<br /><br />Event organizers, coordinating with the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, were forced to call both the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover and the Roxy Pro Gold Coast events for the day, with the potential tsunami projected to hit at 8:15am.<br /><br />?We?ve been monitoring the situation with chief meteorologists throughout the night and all projections are indicating the effects to hit the Gold Coast at approximately 8:15am,? Rod Brooks, Quiksilver Pro Contest Director, said. ?What those effects will be, we cannot be sure. We?ve been advised that the biggest surge could hit anywhere from six to 12 hours after the initial surge, so we?ve called competition off for the day. The event site is closed for the day, and we?ll check back tomorrow at 6:30am.?

      Day 1 at Pipe<br />Saturday, 20 February 2010 04:27<br /><br /><br />The first official day of competition has run at the 2010 Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro Presented by Body Glove.<br /><p align="center"><img src="http://www.news.saltwater-dreaming.com/uploads/71354ecd-7f2c-1758.jpg"></p><br />This multi-cultural bodyboarding event attracts competitors from all four corners of the globe, with Brazil, USA, France, Australia, Israel, South Africa and Canada among the many.<br /><br />Waves were large in the 6 to 8 feet range and winds varied from light offshore to strong cross shore, pushing the riders in a variety of testing waves.<br /><br />Drew Innocend of Queensland Australia, was the most impressive surfer of the day.<br /><br />Innocend notched up a 17.60 combined wave total in his round three heat, the highest of the day.  This included a near perfect 9.83 score for being spat out<br /><br />of a huge Backdoor Barrell and launching into a massive backflip.  All of Innocend's waves were executed with a beautiful precision.<br /><br />Finishing second in the heat was Tom Smith also of Australia with 14.83 and in third Daniel Fonesca of Portugal in 10.74.<br /><br />

Surf for the final day was in the range of 10-15-foot wave face heights.br /br /Australian pair Anthony Walsh and Mark Mathews were second and third respectively in the final, both breaking surfboards and forced to swim to the beach during the 45-minute bout. Fourth place was Hawaii?s Danny Fuller, who posted the day?s only perfect 10 during his semi-final heat but was unable to exit several deep tubes in the final that might have scored the same.br /br /Two high scores - 8.77 and 8.23 - sealed the deal for O?Brien, giving him a two-wave total of 17.0 out of a maximum 20.br /br /
