The opening event of the 2010 ASP World Tour season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast whittled the field down to the final four competitors with Australians and Hawaiians battling it out for supremacy.

Tsunami Threat Forces Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast OFF for Today

COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, February 28, 2010)? A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile early Saturday morning, resulting in a tsunami warning for the East Coast of Australia effective today.

Event organizers, coordinating with the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, were forced to call both the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover and the Roxy Pro Gold Coast events for the day, with the potential tsunami projected to hit at 8:15am.

?We?ve been monitoring the situation with chief meteorologists throughout the night and all projections are indicating the effects to hit the Gold Coast at approximately 8:15am,? Rod Brooks, Quiksilver Pro Contest Director, said. ?What those effects will be, we cannot be sure. We?ve been advised that the biggest surge could hit anywhere from six to 12 hours after the initial surge, so we?ve called competition off for the day. The event site is closed for the day, and we?ll check back tomorrow at 6:30am.?

COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Friday, February 26, 2010)? The world?s best surfers assembled at the Gold Coast Convention Centre last night for the ASP World Champions? Crowning, a gala event and the premiere evening in professional surfing.

Taking top honors for the evening were Gold Coast duo Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, being officially crowned ASP World Champion and ASP Women?s World Champion respectively.

Kelly Slater (USA), 38, former nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 6, was present to graciously present Fanning with his ASP World Title trophy.

The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover, Stop No. 1 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, will commence its waiting period this weekend, ushering in the greatest assemblage of surfing talent in history with 15 ASP World Titles being represented amongst the 48-man draw.

Kelly Slater (USA), 38, former nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 6, will return to the singlet this season, challenging for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title against the world?s best surfers in the world?s best waves. Coming away with an ASP Dream Tour win in Brazil last season, Slater made a mid-year challenge for the crown, yet fell short of the Australian onslaught.

The first official day of competition has run at the 2010 Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro Presented by Body Glove.

This multi-cultural bodyboarding event attracts competitors from all four corners of the globe, with Brazil, USA, France, Australia, Israel, South Africa and Canada among the many.

Waves were large in the 6 to 8 feet range and winds varied from light offshore to strong cross shore, pushing the riders in a variety of testing waves.

Drew Innocend of Queensland Australia, was the most impressive surfer of the day.

Innocend notched up a 17.60 combined wave total in his round three heat, the highest of the day. This included a near perfect 9.83 score for being spat out

of a huge Backdoor Barrell and launching into a massive backflip. All of Innocend's waves were executed with a beautiful precision.

Finishing second in the heat was Tom Smith also of Australia with 14.83 and in third Daniel Fonesca of Portugal in 10.74.

The opening event on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast will be the first time such an assemblage of talent has congregated since December, and this year?s ASP Top 45 are led by two of the region?s finest.

Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, reigning two-time ASP World Champion, posted an inspired come-from-behind campaign in 2009 to claim his second ASP World Title (the first in 2007), and approaches this year focused on repeating the feat and setting up a dynasty within the annals of surfing history.

Big Wednesday.....the day was certainly true to the forecast, as we were greeted by 12 - 15 ft solid west swell this morning at Sunset Beach for the 2nd day of the Sunset Beach Pro, presented by Red Nose, the first stop on the Stand Up World Tour for 2010. Stand Up World Tour officials monitored the conditions from daybreak until the judges meeting to assess the viability of putting the athletes out there in what was definitely ridable, but, without doubt, extremely challenging conditions.
